  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: Serves 6

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium green cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef or turkey
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 15 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup cooked rice (white or brown)
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp olive oil for sautéing

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Remove the core from the cabbage and blanch the leaves in boiling water for about 5 minutes until pliable.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil and sauté diced onion until soft. Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant.
  3. Add ground beef or turkey to the skillet, breaking it up as it cooks until browned (about 7 minutes). Drain excess grease if necessary.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, cooked rice, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Let simmer on low for about 10 minutes.
  5. In a baking dish, layer half of the meat mixture on the bottom. Top with cabbage leaves followed by the remaining meat mixture. Cover with foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 25 minutes.
