Ingredients
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 cups oats (quick cooking or old-fashioned)
- 4 tablespoons milk
- 2 cups powdered sugar (sifted)
- Water (as needed)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, cream together the shortening and sugars until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the water and vanilla extract. In another bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon; gradually add to the creamed mixture. Fold in the oats.
- Drop spoonfuls onto greased baking sheets with even spacing.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 10-12 minutes until golden brown. Cool on racks.
- For icing, mix milk and powdered sugar in a bowl; adjust consistency with water as necessary.
- Dip cooled cookies into the icing and let them set on racks.
