  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 12 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups cake flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cloves
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon orange extract
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • Zest of an orange, divided
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 3 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • Cinnamon for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C) and line a muffin pan with cupcake liners.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, sea salt, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg.
  3. In a large bowl using an electric mixer, beat together the softened butter and dark brown sugar until creamy, about two minutes.
  4. Add in the eggs one at a time along with the vanilla and orange extracts. Beat until light and fluffy. Mix in the sour cream and one tablespoon of orange zest until well combined.
  5. On low speed, add half of your dry ingredients followed by the milk, then incorporate the remaining dry mixture until just combined.
  6. Spoon or pour the batter into the lined cupcake cups, filling them about two-thirds full. Bake for about 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow to cool completely before frosting.
  7. For the frosting, beat room temperature butter until creamy, then add in cream cheese until smooth. Add vanilla and orange extracts along with salt before gradually adding confectioner’s sugar until the perfect consistency is achieved.
  8. Frost each cooled cupcake and sprinkle with cinnamon.
